Hip-Hop sings about weed like Taylor Swift sings about her exes that messed her over: THEY LOVE TO DO IT ALL THE TIME. Now, there are three elements that are a necessity to making a good hip-hop weed song:
1. A laid back, yet bass heavy beat (with smooth, yet strikingly different chords)
2. So much reverb in the song, it sounds like it was recorded at a secret depths-of-the-Earth cave performance.
3. Talk about weed.
These songs meet and exceed those requirements. Let’s take a look-see at them. Or a look-hear. I can’t tell which sense is what, I’m so high right now (no I’m not, I just can’t type).
Kendrick Lamar- The Recipe ft. Dr. Dre
This song is recent but will go down in history. Hopefully. The sample seems to say “smoking weed with you”, which automatically puts it on the list.
Mystikal-I Smell Smoke
This story-telling song is hilarious to listen to while blowed. His voice is so loud everyone will burst into laughter when they hear it.
Styles P- I Get High
Do not listen to the clean/edited version of this. They replay the sample and it WILL blow your high. But this is an enjoyable song, even for non-smokers.
Kid Cudi-Maui Wowie
Taking the beat from the original group Grindmode’s I’m So High, Cudi sings about his love. Both of these songs are some of my favorites. A lot faster than the other songs, but the synth chords contain some type of magic that gives that inebriated feeling.
Curren$y- Smoke Break
Currensy is one of those artists that just represent marijuana, so picking out a single song about weed is kind of hard. So I’ll just give you this song with some stylistic visuals. It’s smoke-ception.
Three Six Mafia-Bin Laden Weed
Personally, I think some of their odes to drank are better than their songs about weed. However, this is amongst the best about weed. Drugs named after terrorists? Cool.
A$AP Rocky- Wassup
Ok. This song isn’t about weed, but hell if it doesn’t feel like it is. The problem with certain rappers is they rap too hard over weed songs, or their weed song tries to hard to be a weed song. The key is in the sound. A$AP’s whole signature sound is like a drug trip.
Devin The Dude- Doobie Ashtray
Produced by Dj Premier. Slightly humorous. Great story. Classic. Period. LOTS OF PERIODS.
Outkast-SpottieOttieDopalicious
This song belongs on any hip-hop mix. Ever. Even if you’re making a Crunk mix, you better put this song on there. Even though you’re probably going to get mad at me, you’ll thank me later when the ladies you bribed to come over start body-rolling to this one. Send your regards.
Wiz Khalifa-Up
I remember my first time hearing this song in the car. Even as a non-smoker I immediately thought “I want to be high for this”. Wiz’s singing isn’t singing, but he hits all the right notes. It just sounds like a guy who is so inspired by the beauty of his weed, he breaks out into song mid-session.
